The skills of Emma Bernard, the director and dramaturg, were vital too...the flow and clarity in the show's mix of archival film, song, visual elaboration (Dragan Aleksic) and survivors' testimonies of pain and grit were unexpectedly seamless and strong.Maybe the key lay in costuming instrumentalists as well as singers in Terezin clothes and yellow stars: these weren't just musicians, they were actors and the glue that held everything together. Her slow and easy songs, still served as eloquent vehicles for powerful feelings...the voices of the Zemel Choir, we reached birdsong and the indomitable human spirit. It didn't feel like a false step at all.
