Obsession (2016)
- G Schirmer Inc (World)
Programme Note
Composer note:
Obsession is a short piano piece that attempts to illustrate the concept of a disturbing preoccupation with a single idea, also known in psychology as idée fixe. I find the notion of an exaggerated use of repetition particularly interesting to explore musically, especially that the process of composition itself often requires a complete concentration on one task for an extended period of time.
The piece was written for an internationally acclaimed pianist Marina Baranova, who is not only a friend of mine but also, since recently, my sister-in-law. I first met Marina when I was 15. At the time, I was not a musician. When she practiced, I would sit next to her and listen with astonishment. Even though I lacked knowledge in music, her playing spoke to me on an emotional level. The exposure to her talent at that age was beyond inspiring. Since then, it has been a dream of mine to hear her play my music. This piece represents our close friendship and a musical collaboration spanning over 15 years.
