A Danish psalm text The Fairest of Roses by H. A. Brorson describing the infant Christ as a rose flower, soft and mild, in contrast to the harsh, thorny world around us. A text filled with contrasts and baroque drama. The melody is of unknown origin, and is serene and calm like the beautiful rose. It is the serenity and the purity of this psalm that Frederik Magle expands upon in his arrangement or re-composition of the song The Fairest of Roses – Fanfare for two Trumpets and Organ. The soft rose unfolds from a quiet beginning into an elaborate and warm celebration of the music and its subject.
In Denmark, the psalm is traditionally sung during Christmas time, but due to the overall pietistic character of the text– the plea to turn away from sin – the psalm no doubt finds resonance throughout the year.
