Programme Note

The first movement, Prelude, sets text from Völuspá in the Poetic Edda, describing the creation of the earth, the stars, the sun, the moon, and the first humans, Ask and Embla.

The second movement, Hogboy, is based on a poem by Faroese writer William Heinesen, translated into English by Gunnar Hoydal. The poem begins:

"Hogboy, the spectre with the cheery name, lives in the mound Maeís Hove in the Orkney island of Pomona. Here you can hear him singing bewildered songs in the dark. Playful Pomona girls are dancing in the moonlight around the old grave…"
