Programme Note
Rumours for piano is written for Manuel Esperilla.
Rumours has 4 movements.
1. Gossip is a humoresque inspired by H. C. Andersen’s fairy tale ’It’s Quite True’.
2. Story. Here I think of Karen Blixen, the storyteller that often embellished the truth for the sake of a good story. A noble ’baronessa theme’ is developed and entangled.
3. I know. It’s ambiguous: a 3 and 4-part bar, and two different keys, at the same time. The movement is dedicated to Shostakovich, who had to learn to navigate communism’s Potemkin villages.
4. Told. Maybe reminds you of something you once heard, which was a little too good to be true.
