Programme Note
I wrote this piece in March 2020, when choirs briefly fell silent due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I wanted to compose a piece for singers that were unable to meet in person but were working together digitally. Night Prayer brings together two versions of the ancient plainchant, ‘Te lucis ante terminum’ (Before the ending of the day), set against gently hummed textures and slow-moving harmonies. Throughout the work there are gathering points, designed to accommodate singers working at a remove. If performing the piece in the same room, please feel free to experiment with everyone being in time or singing each phrase at their own pace — hopefully everything should fit together with a little flexibility! – Owain Park
