Programme Note
This setting of George Herbert’s poem ‘A Wreath’ has been written in memory of Edmund Bridges, who sang tenor in the choirs of Magdalen College and Christ Church, Oxford. In the middle of this music are a couple of references to the hymn ‘All my hope on God is founded’ whose words were written by Edmund’s great great grandfather Robert Bridges. The tune with which this hymn is associated is ‘Michael’ by Herbert Howells, and it is this melody which is quoted briefly from bar 46. Many thanks to the Herbert Howells Trust for their permission to do so.
