Programme Note
My Missa Brevis was written for the Choir of St Giles Cathedral and Michael Harris Saint Giles Cathedral’s 900th anniversary. As someone who grew up singing in the choir of Old Saint Paul’s, not far from Saint Giles, choral music has always resonated deeply for me. The Kyrie explores pairs of voices together with bursts of organ solos. The Gloria is quick and lively and the Sanctus is more stately and subdued until it’s Hosanna. In the Benedictus, grave falling sequences are alternated with joyful solo voices and organ. The Agnus Dei builds imitative entries in the voices before releasing organ momentum alongside a more rhythmic miserere in the voices.
