Note
If Henry King’s Untamed (20th Century Fox, 1955) were to be filmed today, it would probably be an epic television mini-series. The film is based on Helga Moray’s riches-to-rags novel which tells a decades-long story of a Dutchman (Tyrone Power) and an English girl (Susan Hayward), opening in 1847 on a Boer trek in South Africa.
The Fox production chief Daryl F. Zanuck originally cast Robert Mitchum in Power’s role. The film also features an outstanding supporting cast including Agnes Moorehead and Richard Egan. The spirit of the action is perfectly captured and elevated by the rousing score composed by Franz Waxman.
