Melbourne Arioso (2016)
(for solo guitar)

Composed for Xuefei Yang, to whom it is dedicated, Melbourne Arioso is a nocturne which pays homage to the Melbourne artist Clarice Beckett (1887–1935), whose mysterious, gently epiphanic visions of suburban dusk, night and fog reveal the extraordinary within the ordinary.

The world premiere of Melbourne Arioso was given by Xuefei Yang in the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall in the Melbourne Recital Centre on 3 November 2016. It was commissioned by the Melbourne Recital Centre with the generous support of Maria Sola. I gratefully acknowledge the technical advice of guitarist Timothy Kain.
