Programme Note

The Birds Belong to All of Us is a live adaptation of music from the Ellen Reid SOUNDWALK public art installation. This music was originally written in an aleatoric form to score The Ramble in Central Park. The title comes from Christian Cooper, a Black birdwatcher whose confrontation with a white dog walker in Central Park, New York, in 2020 made headlines around the world and on social media. You will hear birdsong of the various species that Cooper listed in an interview with the New York Times, the final words of the interview giving the work its title.
