Programme Note

Winter's Near was commissioned by the Temple Music Foundation for Nathan Vale and Julius Drake. The commission was supported by Jeremy Stuart-Smith who suggested that Shakespeare's Sonnet 97 be set for Tenor, French Horn and Piano as it has several musical references such as bird song and "mute"-ness and was included in a famous edition in 1609, the year after King James granted the land and buildings of the Temple to the two Inns.
