Programme Note

This short work was written as a gift to my friend James MacMillan, to celebrate his 60th birthday, and as a tribute to his extraordinary creative gift, which has been an inspiration to me for many years.

It was first performed by The Cumnock Tryst Festival Chorus (conducted by Eamonn Dougan) on 6th October 2019 at The Cumnock Tryst Festival.

The text is a poem from Carmina Gadelica, the collection of Gaelic songs and blessings collected and translated by Alexander Carmichael between 1860 and 1909.
