Programme Note

While working on a ballet of The Tempest with choreographer David Bintley, for Birmingham Royal Ballet, I have written a series of solo pieces which relate to the music in some way.

This short soliloquy for solo ʼcello expresses the voice of Miranda, who was three years old when forced into exile with her father, Prospero. They were cast out to sea in a small boat and by good fortune were washed up on the island which is the only home Miranda knows. Her memories of her former life are ‘rather like a dream’ – half-remembered impressions of grandeur and comfort which starkly contrast with her present situation.

This work is dedicated to Robert Irvine, and is written in aid of Unicef.
