Programme Note

The added third voice to each of Bach’s fifteen inventions seeks to destabilize the compositional balance of Bach’s original two voices through injecting something akin to a virus into each invention, which then metastasizes throughout the body of the composition. The virus is a parasite that disrupts the lyrical communication between the two voices by imitating its rules of counterpoint and distorting them through disjointed and jarring cross-relations, or passing consecutive dissonances, which are taken to extreme conditions. These extreme conditions resist ease of integration for a listener and allow for a more materialist listening of Bach’s musical structures.
