I've always felt that however beautiful, some previous settings of this text have been a little fey... For me, this is a moment of intense excitement, mystery and drama (when I think back to the moments of discovering that I was pregnant - and I wasn't informed by anything as glamorous as an angel!) and should portray the momentous implications of what or who Mary was about to bring into the world.
This setting was commissioned and premiered by Downe House Choral and its conductor, Anthony Cain for their Christmas service in 2004.
