Programme Note

The inexpressible (that which seems mysterious to me and which I am unable to express) perhaps provides the background against which what I have been able to express takes on meaning.

This aphorism by Ludwig Wittgenstein from ‘Vermischte Bemerkungen’ is the starting point of my piece Gramática de lo indecible (Grammar of the inexpressible). It provides both an intellectual background and part of the sound material (at the end of the piece it acts as a sound generator by being whispered into the instruments in Spanish).

Wittgenstein's sentence is only seemingly paradoxical. For me, it describes in a wonderfully poetic way what we composers do every day: to handle the inexpressible, to bring it into a form; to organize it without forcing it into a corset; to find a grammar for it without demystifying it; to speak with the music, even if its vocabulary is inexpressible.
