Programme Note
In the past, the "four humours theory" held sway, according to which a person's physical and mental characteristics were determined by the four humours blood, phlegm, black bile and yellow bile ("choler"). Choler was commissioned by the BBC for Nic Hodges and Rolf Hind to premiere at the 2004 Huddersfield Festival of Contemporary Music.
