Blue and Gray (2005)
(for two double basses)

Mark Rothko's 1962 painting of the same name inspired Rebecca Saunders to write this work. Blue and Gray utilises the full range of the 5-string double bass with a preference for its raw tone and elemental violence. At the same time, the composer insists on a round, warm tone quality and melodic expression.
