        Programme Note

        Based on the fairytale by H.C. Andersen, choreography by Tobias Praetorius, costumes and scenography by HRM Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. The music draws inspiration from different musical periods in order to paint a vivid picture of the characters and their soroundings. The influences are in particular the tonal language of Schostakovich, Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev, but also Nordic composers like Carl Nielsen and Grieg and to the Danish folk music tradition from the 18th century and the fiddler Rasmus Storm.
