Programme Note

"Take Five for Nine" (double concerto for double bass, percussion and ensemble) is a composition in the 5-note rhythm  for nine instruments.

The clear 5-note rhythm and its extended metric units (10/8, 20/8, 30/8, 40/8) are contrasted with odd time signatures (9/8, 11/8, 13/8, 19/8, 29/8, 41/8), whereby there are minimal shifts in the pulse centre throughout.

The two solo instruments, double bass and percussion, mainly take on the functions of the bass lines and rhythms best assigned to them, in addition to occasional solo cadenzas.

The piece is dedicated in loving memory of the wonderful percussionist Bernd Thurner (1966-2024).
