Programme Note
I got to know Christian Lehnert through our mutual mentor Hans Werner Henze. Im frühen Licht is now the fourth project with him, following works for the Dresdner Kammerchor and Hans-Christoph Rademann, for the Raschèr Saxophone Quartet and for the Thomanerchor, linked to the inauguration of the new Thomaskantor Andreas Reize.
Working with poems by Christian Lehnert is always a great pleasure and compositional challenge for me.
The commissioned work for the Windsbach Boys' Choir and its conductor Ludwig Böhme, to whom Im frühen Licht is also dedicated, has strong references to nature and the theme of breath.
In the four movements I work with different techniques, free and aleatoric, strictly contrapuntal, polytonal and with small motivic cells.
Composing for the human voice is an important part of my compositional work.
