This work was commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Society for its 175th anniversary.
The first performance was given on 22nd April 1987 at the Royal Festival Hall, London, by Heather Harper (Soprano) and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras.
The composer has since added a new song (no 5) and this is the first performance of the revised version.
