OIL AND PETROL MARKS ON A WET ROAD ARE SOMETIMES HELD TO BE SPOTS
WHERE A RAINBOW STOOD

This piece is a short documentary opera attempting to 'map' the
regional variations of the rhymes, games and superstitions
- of which the title is one of these - to be found in the childrens'
playgrounds of England, Wales and Scotland.
The piece is for 16 solo singers using four of each voice and
Some of the rhymes are spoken with regional accents. The piece
also makes use of the classic documentary voice-over which
comments on the children's activities.
The work won the 1988 Guido d'Arezzo International Composers
Competition and in 1989 was recorded for the BBC by the BBC
Singers. It received its first concert performance in 1991 by the
BBC Singers at the Helsinki Biennale and was subsequently
performed at the Warsaw Autumn in the Same year.
