Composer note:
Magic With Everyday Objects is a piece on the verge of a nervous breakdown, in which the "everyday" building blocks of music are turned upside-down. Chords slide relentlessly out of tune, repetitive melodies become hopelessly entangled, and a schmaltzy piano melody perseveres through a frenzy of sound. This is a piece about finding beauty and rapture in the midst of chaos, and about acknowledging the chaos that lies just beneath the surface of beauty. Magic With Everyday Objects is dedicated to NOW Ensemble, a group that can make magic out of anything. It was premiered during the 2007 Bang On A Can Marathon in New York City.
