Programme Note
Doom Painting, for Tine Thing Helseth, is a concerto in three sections which engages with the history, both real and symbolic, of trumpets in the bible. The first movement (Clarioun) treats the trumpet as a ceremonial object: accompanying processions, sacrifices, and rituals both solemn and celebratory. The second movement (Doom Painting), explores in abstraction the very musical rhythms of sacred wall-paintings depicting the last judgement and the end of the world. The third movement (Every Thing That Hath Breath) is a purely joyful tour of the trumpet’s role in the psalms; I’ve long maintained that the psalms are, in many ways, an orchestration manual, ending with psalm 150: a short but concise list of instruments of jubilation. In this piece, I try to explore the trumpet’s expressive possibilities as an ancient instrument, predating most other instruments in the modern orchestra.
